Most communities have scads of no/low cost activities you can enjoy together. Generosity doesn't need dollar signs attached. Now if the issue is that he can't afford a 5 restaurant, you really need to lower the bar. You can't squeeze blood from a turnip. But if he can't manage a glass of iced tea or a cup of coffee, then he isn't trying very hard. And I think that's what's bothering you.
